Wallpaper on the Playroom

The ceiling in the playroom is really low - just under eight feet. It actually feels nice and cozy, especially for the kids, but I wanted to try and trick the eye a little. I hung <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" target="_blank">the yellow curtains</a> almost up to the ceiling and that helped, but it felt like we needed something a little more exciting up on or by the ceiling.<br />

I've always loved Julia Rothman's <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" target="_blank">Daydream wallpaper</a> from Hygge & West. In a middle-of-the-night design session I remembered the pattern and reached out the company to see if they had enough rolls in stock to send me a rush shipment. We were only a few days out from the Domino shoot at this point and I needed that paper ASAP!! Hygge & West was <i>wonderful </i>to work with and they rushed those couple of rolls out right away.<br />

I went with <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" target="_blank">the green color way</a>, which has a creamy background, soft blue clouds and the prettiest color of jade green on the sweet little birdies. When the girls walked in after the paper hangers were finished, there were all sorts of oohs and ahhs and even some squeals. :) A very good sign. Gracie called it magical, which was pretty much the perfect compliment. I think it feels pretty magical too.<br />

We finished out the edges with just some casing trim (no room for even a short crown) that we painted with left over paint from the bathroom ceiling (Farrow and Ball's Pale Powder). We matched the baseboards too and left the walls white (Benjamin Moore's Chantilly Lace).<br />

The light fixture was a happy find at Lowes! It was a steal at $30!<br />

The wallpaper was a relatively affordable way to quickly transform this space. I spent almost no money on anything else in the playroom, so I felt good about investing in the couple of rolls and the labor for the paper hangers. I did save a lot of money by prepping the walls myself. We skim coated every surface, including the ceiling, with hot mud and then primed it all. It was a ton of work, but it helped me feel better about hiring out the paper.  And really, we were so out of time, there was no way I could have hung this by myself. Plus it turns out there are all sorts of fancy contraptions the paper hanger used to install the long sheets at this angle. Tricky stuff! Sometimes it's best to leave installation to professionals - precious wallpaper is one of those times I think.<br />

I couldn't be happier with this room. We use it all day long and it feels like such a happy, welcoming space where the girls can play and read and work on homework.<br />

Fireworks Wall Stencil

Hi guys! - Just a quick update for the locals planning to come to the <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" target="_blank">Home Depot DIY Workshop</a> tomorrow. I wanted to clarify that we won't be making the <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" target="_blank">lighting DIY</a> I shared last week, although I'd be more than happy to help you find and even make the structure tomorrow at the Tempe store on Baseline. The lighting workshop, which starts at 10:00 am, will be lead by the store's DIY workshop leader and I'll just be there to talk a little bit and mostly just hang out with you all! :) We'll be talking about using different types of lighting and bulbs in your home and sharing tips on how to switch out old lights for more energy-efficient ones. <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" target="_blank">Hope you can come</a>!</div>

I really love getting emails with links to your projects. <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" target="_blank">Meghan Morrow</a> sent me this stenciling project she did in her home and I LOVE how it turned out! Her husband is in the Army and they live on base, so they move a lot. She had been dying to use Albert Hadley's Fireworks wallpaper (made by Hinson, distributed by Donghia) in her home for years, but it didn't make any sense for them to invest in that kind of installation.</div>

We've been working on a stenciling project here at my house and I can attest that it can be a little tricky to get crisp lines on every repeat. It seems like the secret though is to not use too much paint and to keep both the stencil and the brush very clean.<br />

Wallpaper Home Decor

I love how high the ceilings are in our entry, but it makes it a little bit tricky to decorate in there! The big walls just swallow up even two or three pieces of art stacked on each other.<br />

I'm so excited to share more, but at the twelfth hour before the big shoot next week, we have decided to wallpaper the entry! I am <i>beyond excited. </i><br />

<i><br /></i>The wallpaper arrived within an hour of the wallpaper hanger today - just in time! We saved a little bit of money by prepping the walls ourselves, but I wish I could have DIYed the whole thing. I've hung wallpaper a bunch of times before and it's usually a doable project, but this was definitely a job for the pros. A big part of it is we are completely out of time and this was a last minute decision, but the bottom line is I get dizzy just thinking about carefully hanging those long sheets on a 18' ladder! It is worth every pretty penny to get to admire from afar on this one! ;)<br />

Studio Bathroom Walls

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Yesterday I shared how I painted the studio bathroom tile black, which I'll admit, was sort of a big </span>commitment<span style="font-family: inherit;">. I wanted the room to feel girlie and fun, but still modern and interesting. It's technically our guest bathroom as well, but since Heather is living with us in the guest room, it's mostly just her and Kate and I that ever are in the space. So basically, I felt like I had free reign to go as girlie as I wanted!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">The previously white walls felt really stark in here since the only light source was (and still is) a pair of wall sconces, so I decided to warm up the color and to get a little experimental with a fun pattern.</span><br />

After swinging by <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" target="_blank">The Home Depot</a> and picking up a few rolls of Scotch Blue<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Cambria; font-size: 16.363636016845703px;">™</span> Painter's Tape to experiment with, I finally had a lightbulb moment.<br />

<span style="font-family: inherit; text-align: center;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: inherit; text-align: center;">I used <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" target="_blank">a roll of .94" ScotchBlue</a> (it's the Original Multi-Use 2090) to make an abstract line pattern on all the walls above the tile and even on the ceiling. </span>I was inspired by <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" target="_blank">this uber-talented artist</a> that Domino featured in the current issue. He did a <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" target="_blank">similar treatment</a> to the walls in his home using duct tape. I love how these little lines are so simple and they make such a big visual impact.<br />
<br />
To make a pretty fast process go even faster, I cut the tape (5-7" or so in random lengths) in large batches all at once before applying the strips to the walls.<br />

It's easy to make the abstract pattern and it actually looks best if you don't over-think things while you're placing the tape on the walls. </div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Like with any painting project, it's important to really press down the edges of the ScotchBlue tape before you paint. </span><br />

Don't forget to let the line continue in and through the corners and be sure to start some pieces below the actual starting line (the tile in my case). This makes the pattern look more like wallpaper.</div>

We have some slight texture on the wall in some places so I did my little trick of sealing the edges with a quick layer of the base coat before painting the top coat. Works every time!</div>

I like to peel the tape off while the paint is still wet. I don't know if that makes any difference in the end result, but it feels like it would, right?</div>

The color we used for the base coat is my favorite white, Benjamin Moore's Chantilly Lace, and the top coat is the prettiest blush color called Spun Sugar by Sherwin Williams (I had both color matched at Home Depot). We don't have any windows in this bathroom, but I'm thinking this color would be gorgeous in natural light. So pretty and soft for a bedroom.</div>

The pattern is playful enough that it would look adorable in a kids room, but when paired with black and brass accents and with lots of art hanging on the walls, the abstract pattern feels modern and cool.</div>

I also came up with a new way to reface old 80s cabinets that I'm really happy with. The basic idea is to use hardboard to create a faux front. I think I'm going to put a twist on the technique for a redo of our kitchen cabinets, so stay tuned for that tutorial!</div>

I had to turn down the contrast in this photo so you could see the new sconces. I talked about them <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" target="_blank">here</a>. They're from <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" target="_blank">Triple 7 Recycled</a> on Etsy and they literally could not have been easier to install, especially since the mounting hardware is exposed. I had these babies up in about 20 minutes! I love them and I love the way the light from the exposed bulbs plays on the abstract line pattern on the walls. It's really soft and dreamy in person.</div>
